From India, to South Africa, to Toronto; see how this designer’s story unfolds as she makes her mark in the Canadian fashion industry.
Great fashion is derived from a fascinating life. A memorable design is what a designer strives for and the creative mind behind the House of Poplyn is just that.
Born in India, a country known for its colourful background and muti-cultural characteristics, Tanushree Pande, the designer and founder of the fashion label, Poplyn, was easily consumed by the fashion world and was inspired by the culture that surrounded her. With the heritage and charm of India instilled in her, Pande moved to South Africa, where she discovered more opportunities and absorbed the bold and beautiful influences.
Finally Pande gathered all that she had seen and settled in Toronto, Canada – a place booming with thirst for fashion and emerging designers. It was the perfect place for the House of Poplyn to become a reality.
Not only is Pande the mind and force behind the brand but she is also an avid illustrator, stylist and fashion writer.
House of Poplyn has seen great success over the years. The brand launched in August 2013 with a 10-piece women’s clothing line. In April 2014, Pande was chosen as one of the designers to participate at Arts & Fashion Week. The S/S 2014 collection called “RAILROAD” inspired by TTC (Toronto Transit Commission), was featured at the show, where the runway was transformed into a TTC subway with great props and music. This collection will be featured throughout this article.

Don’t you just love when trends stick around from previous seasons? One pattern I’m extremely happy to see taking over store displays everywhere is houndstooth. Find out how to wear it this season below.
In early reference, Houndstooth, which may also be referred to as dogstooth, is a duotone textile pattern that consists of broken check marks and abstract shapes. The overall look, which is often in black and white. The pattern was introduced by a fashion clothier from New York in 1885.
This pattern is one that has been wore and recognized in the fashion industry for years and often linked to the classy designs of Chanel and the designer’s houndstooth printed dresses and suits. Not only does this print offer you a secure feeling of elegance but it also looks great on just about everyone! Unlike stripes, this pattern accents a women’s figure.
While some shoppers are resistant to trying on a new pattern, houndstooth should not be added to that list. The pattern almost looks like an optical illusion, which helps to make it look amazing on every body type.

One of the best things about fall approaching is the ability and ease of modifying an outfit. Dressing a look up or down becomes much easier! This look I’m wearing above, for example, started as a more business-casual look! Running in and out of meetings in the morning I wore a pair of heels and leather jacket. But as the day continued, going to the mall and out for dinner in that outfit wasn’t an option.
I decided to ditch the heels and opted out for my super low-cut Converses and traded the blazer for this baggy knit cardigan. Both were really simple and easy day looks. Minimal jewellery in both – never forget any metal watch makes a little statement on its own.
How do you dress your looks up and down?
Cardigan: Urban Plant, Grey Tank-Top: Ardene, Black Shirt: BCBG, Shoes, Converses
Look no further, here’s your guide to wearing all your favourite pieces of jewellery, regardless of the colour! Mixing metals is the new way to wear everything from rings to necklaces. So follow these easy tips to learn how.
The myth about mixing metals needs to come to an end. As we all know, trends come and go in the fashion world and the hottest fad in jewellery right now is wearing gold, silver and rose gold together. While the rumour used to be that mixing metals was tacky; when done right, these different coloured metals will accent an outfit rather than ruin it.
1. One “Major” Metal
The first step is choosing one colour as your “major” or dominant metal and allowing the rest to be used as accents.
If you love silver or white gold, and have the most of it in your collection, than choose that as a starting point. This way you’re comfortable with wearing what you already have and it’ll be easy to add some other colours on top of it.
Take the photo above for example, while all those silver bracelets look great together, swapping two of them for a yellow gold would be the perfect way to incorporate a different metal. It’s still evident that silver is dominant because of the colour of the watch. Bracelets and watches are the easiest and first step to take when beginning to mix metals.
2. Layered Necklaces
Wearing more than one necklace is a really simple and effortless way to mix metals. Just remember to keep it simple – the more delicate each necklace is, the nicer the overall look will be. Don’t wear statement necklaces together or necklaces with too many coloured gems and stones.

As promised, I’ve decided to create a lookbook of different fashion looks any girl can achieve. We’ve seen the everyday chic look and a night out with the ladies; up next is the fashionable way to spend a day in the city.
No secret here, the shirtdress is exactly what it sounds like! A dress, that fits like an oversized shirt – making it not only comfortable, but stylish!
This summer and curving into fall, these dresses came in all types and styles, and luckily they’re here to stay. The perfect shirtdress accents your body without forcing you to wear a push-up bra, uncomfortable undies, Spanx, or any other crazy gimmick us ladies buy into.
Not only is a dress like this great for a day out, but you can really handle anything the city throws at you (depending on what shoes you wear, but we’ll get to that a little later).
Finally, IF possible, the shirtdress you find will have pockets ! Because who doesn’t love pockets on a dress?
